TOGETHER, WE CAN HELP PROTECT THE GREAT LAKES

Henry Ford West Bloomfield’s efforts to promote “green” habits do not stop at the greenhouse. The pharmacy just renewed its contract for the “Yellow Jug, Old Drugs” program with Great Lakes Clean Water Organization. This program gives a community the opportunity to dispose of unwanted, unused, or expired drugs in a safe and environmentally friendly way.

Before this program, the only options consumers had were to flush these substances down the drain or send them to the local landfill. These actions lead to serious consequences for the Great Lakes by leaving traces of chemicals in the water. These harmful substances not only pose a threat to people but also to the fish, birds, and other aquatic wildlife which make the Great Lakes their home.

The “Yellow Jug, Old Drugs” program started in Michigan and is now being implemented in Illinois and Wisconsin. As of June, it is also available in Indiana and Ohio. To date, more than 8,000 pounds of drugs have been disposed of responsibly through this program.

Henry Ford West Bloomfield believes in a healthy environment. Reversing harm to the Great Lakes is much more difficult and costly than changing bad habits before damage occurs. These efforts are essential since the Great Lakes account for more than 95 percent of all surface freshwater in the US.

The “Yellow Jug, Old Drugs” program also provides convenience to patients and visitors who can fill prescriptions and dispose of unwanted drugs in one location.

Together We Can promote community health and maintain clean water in Michigan and throughout the Great Lakes region.
